Everyone has the power to change. To survive change. To lead change and be a Changemaker. I did it. And so can you”

Emily Hikiati, Ambassador and Care Leaver

To help improve the lives of children and young people in Australia, Adopt Change runs Events for Change which hosts regular online and in person events for carers, families, educators, child welfare professionals, policy makers, and children and young people themselves.

Events for Change range from small in-person gatherings and online peer support groups, through to virtual training sessions and presentations to schools and parent groups. We also host state-based workshops and national conferences.

Our major Events

  • #THRIVE Adopt Change National Permanency Conference

An annual event held in response to the Community Services Ministers’ commitment made in 2016 to prioritise permanency for children in out-of-home care. It’s an opportunity for those involved in the child welfare sector to hear from government representatives on the progress made in their jurisdictions since their commitment, and how they plan to meet it. Experts from across the globe provide keynote addresses and supplement local skills and knowledge, as well as host forums and more intimate question and answer sessions.

  • Yesvember – National Adoption & Permanency Awareness Month

Adopt Change’s first National Adoption Awareness Month (NAAM) was in 2008, with the aim of shining a light on the critical issues and systemic challenges facing vulnerable children in Australia. These days, NAAM or #Yesvember is an annual event designed to raise awareness of the importance of permanency for children, and educate key stakeholders on the support needs of children and families. Throughout #Yesvember, the community is asked to support the work of Adopt Change in ensuring #AHomeForEveryChild. It’s an opportunity to bring decision makers, educators, child welfare sector, broader community, and the media together to focus on key issues surrounding adoption and permanency.

  • Online Loungerooms

In response to the pressure COVID-19 lockdowns placed on households, in March 2020, a unique initiative called “online loungerooms”, was designed to engage with vulnerable families. These virtual face-to-face sessions helped navigate the challenges of parenting during the pandemic and learning from home. Topics included talking with kids about hygiene and self-isolation while supporting kids with trauma. Designed to provide support and guidance for carers across Australia, the online loungerooms enabled up to 20 carers to talk to each other at a time, as well as hear from a subject matter expert and a 20-minute question and answer session.

  • Empower Change

Empower Change is a free program for young people preparing for independence. It will provide an opportunity to meet people with similar experiences, hear from Care Leaver Mentors who have walked this journey, and get advice from experts on various topics such as budgeting, seeking employment and housing, and creating healthy relationships. Participants are encouraged to join this supportive community and ask questions, chat, or just listen in. Downloadable resources are available with tips and links to help on the journey exiting care. The online program runs 12 sessions across 2021 and is open to youth aged 15-18 in out-of-home care in regional NSW.
